I have been part of Walkway for 32 years both as a volunteer and paid worker. I am East Belfast, ‘born and bred’ and I'm committed to working to improve the quality of life for the people in our community. I manage the staff, programmes, and the upkeep of the building.

Sophie McGarrity

Community Support Worker

I grew up in the local area, and Walkway has had a huge impact on my life since I first came here as a toddler with my mum to Parent and Tots. Since then, I have been involved in numerous children and youth programmes over the years.

I have a BSc Hons Degree in Business Studies, and I am currently studying for my Community Development Degree at Ulster University. I enjoy socialising with my friends, exploring new places, and taking my dog Olly out for long walks.

My favourite quote is… “what is for you will not go by you”.

Matthew Jones

Youth Leader in Charge

I have been doing youth work in both a paid and a voluntary capacity for just over 12 years. I got into youth work because of the impact my youth workers had on my life and I would like to be able to offer guidance and support to the young people of East Belfast.

I also work full time as a gardener and have done that for the past 8 years. In my spare time I like to take my 2 daughters out to different places and enjoy some family time. I also play for Sirocco Works F.C and I am captain of the 1st team.

My favourite quote is… “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.”

Leah Hagan

Youth Worker

I got into youth work by volunteering in my local church with the kids and youth which led me onto an internship with Willowfield Church. I volunteered for one year with the kids, youth and in the community and loved every minute off it.

I support Liverpool FC I love playing pool and going on outdoor adventures with my friends.

Melissa Barnes

Assistant Youth Support Worker

I started my youth work journey through the YWIC International Programme from volunteering to paid work. I loved seeing the difference youth work made to young people's lives and the opportunities it opened. Similarly to this, I also coach gymnastics and competed competitively. I am currently on my second year of my Early Childhood Degree at Stranmillis University.

I have been at Walkway since I was young coming as part of the youth and now, I am part of the Walkway team as a Youth Worker having fun with the youth, reliving my childhood and being able to develop new skills and experiences.
